What We Do
We provide consulting and project management in service of artist-driven archival collections. Our specialties include:
-
Whether you’re working on your own or with a team, archival projects can be daunting and challenging—where do we start? How do we prioritize? Critical Interval can help you define the bounds of your archival projects, create a work plan, and help you implement our time-tested workflows. We can also help you determine sustainable staffing strategies, preventing project stall-out and facilitating momentum.
-
We help artists, estates, and cultural organizations determine what to preserve and why. We assess value through multiple lenses: evidential, informational, aesthetic, financial, and research potential. This service supports long-term planning, digitization priorities, and access strategy.
-
From material degradation to natural disasters, there are many reasons why archival collections may experience risk. We provide confidential risk assessments, hazard and emergency plans, and handle collection relocation logistics so you don’t have to.
-
Critical Interval also functions as an incubator for a proprietary software product designed for cross-referencing data from both archival and artwork tracking databases. Our goal is to make relational database and metadata workflows more accessible to archive-keepers, while deploying visualization and AI features that help us to contextualize archival materials in new ways. We are currently in a pre-seed phase, so get in early and beta test our software!
-
As media artists ourselves, we are digitization experts with experience handling and digitizing photographic, printed, magnetic/analog, and electronic materials. We spec out what’s needed to create your own digitization studio, develop efficient workflows tailored to your specific digitization projects, and establish effective and automated file storage and retrieval systems.
